Excel and Word "file locations" freeze. 2

A few nights ago I attempted to save a word document and tried to direct to a specific directory. The application froze (1st time in hundreds of saves). After rebooting, it did the same thing. So I deceided it was time to upgrade to Office 2003. I loaded the newer version and proceded to create a document and when I went to do a Save As it froze just like the previous version. I checked Excel and I got the same results.
So I went to TOOLS/OPTIONS/FILE LOCATIONS and tried to set a new default directory. The application froze again.

Do I have gremlins?

By the way, I'm using Norton Corporate Edition Virus Software with a Firewall and have the usual pop-up blockers.

Probably the easiest route to go would be uninstall Office entirely, reboot and install straight to 2003. My gut feeling is that a vital file corrupted and thats why upgrading wouldn't fix it.

Lots of people are having similar problems for about the last week or so - yours may be the same. It is a bad MS update. I think there are multiple threads regarding it, here is one:

Thanks, both of you. I will give it a try. I take it the 908531 is an old update since it was bugging me on my old install before 2003. I read the post on the link you provided and it seems as though I'm not alone.

The update is rather new.

If your problem has been around longer, you should suspect either a dead mapped drive or Norton.

If you haven't done so already, be sure to test that the problem isn't caused by Norton.

I took out 908531 and that seems to have fixed it. I was able to change my default directory. Now to give it the acid test. create a document and do a save as and see if it works.
