A very strange problem;
On a brand new load of a Windows 2000 Pro machine. I have Office 2000 Pro, Innoculate It and that's about all runnning.

When I'm logged in as roaming Administrator everything works perfectly. I can launch MS Word or Excel open and close documents with no problems.

But when I log in as a roaming user (with lesser rights to the system)I can launch the apps OK but when it comes time to open a document it will usually take an inordinate amount of time when Task Manager will actually report the app as not responding. This sometimes happens just by opening up a folder. If I leave it it will finally come up but the same thing happens when I exit the app or just try to close the document.

Task manager does not report any particular process using up a lot of CPU time. I've tried disabling the AV and I've made sure that any printers are properly set up on local ports.

If I try to launch anything else at this time like Task Manager for example it takes a long time to come up.

But when I log back in as Administrator (without reboot) everything works perfectly.

I've tried reinstalling Office logged in as Administrator and the user.

All necessary patches and SP's have been applied.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Use 2 tools to discover where is the problem:
1. Auditing.
2. performance monitor.

Second tool maybe not the best one for this problem but the first - is really will be helpful.

Please, reply with the results.

I'm thinking possibly virus protection here, trying to check macros etc in docs. Just a wild stab in the dark....
If you rename them *.txt and open them in notepad do they open quickly?

1. Try temporarily putting the roaming user in the Administrator's group and see if things speed up.

2. check LAN activity with a Sniffer and watch what traffic takes place, or disconnect from the LAN, reboot, log in as user, and see if still slow.

3. On a spreadsheet that is slow to start, select all cells and copy to clipboard; start new workbook and paste special as unformatted text; close excel; open the new workbook, and see if that is faster.

Results may indicate areas to investigate.

I'm with Jocsta, we've had ridiculous problems at work in which the virus checker wants to open 2 and 300 meg zip files and check everything in them. It reached a point where we dare not click on some drive letters in the network for fear of exactly whar you report.

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions.

As it turns out it is a problem with the antivirus software but not in the way that was thought.

There is a bug in the software which I've received a fix for from Computer Associates help desk. Apparently this is a known problem.

I will be applying it tomorrow and hopefully it works.

Thank you again.
