Excel 97 “Document not saved” 1

Have a user running Excel 97 SR2 on a Win95 box. Occasionally (maybe once a week) after simply entering data into the spreadsheet the user is not able to save. As soon as the user tries to save, an Excel error pops up “Document Not Saved”. It doesn’t matter which drive letter (this is on a network), local or network or whether you try clicking on File, Save As…, and giving it a new name. It will not let you save.<br>

I found Q121942 in Microsoft’s KB which references the symptoms but the cause doesn’t seem to match. The article talks about embedded objects causing the problem but the cases we’ve seen occur after simple edits of data in the spreadsheet.<br>

Any suggestions as to possible solutions would be appreciated.<br>

Bob, I've had this in the past, often with large documents, when memory is low, or when I've previously had a crash while editting. If File SaveAs doesn't work, try creating a new workbook, and using copy and paste to rebuild a new version of the file, this usually seems to get around whatever is locking up the old file.

Thanks for the input. That is in fact what we've been doing as a work around. Copying and pasting to an entirely new spreadsheet. Unfortunately not all of the formating copies over and user frustration is growing.<br>

For ANY file corruption and specifically for this problem, don't copy and paste. Instead, select all the sheets (Right-click on a sheet tab and click on &quot;select all sheets.&quot Then right-click a sheet tab again, select Move or Copy, put a checkmark in &quot;make a copy&quot; and then hit the dropdown and select &quot;new book.&quot; Save the new book to a different name. All formatting is kept. Some problems may occur with files that link to external files. Delete your old file and rename your new one.
