Excel 2007 takes 60 seconds to open blank spreadsheet 4

I have loaded MS Office 2007 on my computer and two others for testing purposes before upgrading the entire company. I have run into several annoying problems that I have found fixes or work arounds for but this one has me stumped.

When I open an Excel spreadsheet, Excel opens and I get the hour glass for about 10 seconds and then I get my regular pointer back but the spreadsheet doesn't display. Excel is open but nothing shows. I discovered (through an accidental click) that if I minimize Excel, it immediately maximizes itself and the spreadsheet shows correctly. I also discovered that if I wait for 60 seconds the spreadsheet will display correctly. I have timed it again and again and like clockwork it always opens after 60 second. This leads me to believe that Excel is waiting for something and it is set to timeout after 60 seconds but I have no clue what it could be.

I get the same behavior on .xls files and .xlsx files and the size of the spreadsheet doesn't affect it either.

I found some info on MS website referring to spreadsheets being slow to open and the fix was to uncheck "Ignore other applications using DDE" but this option is not checked on my 3 test computers. I also found a post on another site suggesting and updated graphics card driver will fix the problem but for me it didn't.

I did find a solution for the problem with Excel taking 60 seconds to open any spreadsheet.

Howevever; Word, Excel and Outlook '07 still seem to be very slow opening and working. I understand MS Office '07 being more of a resource hog but I'm on a P4 3GHz machine with 2 GB of RAM. My other test computers have dual processors of at least 1.8 GHz each and at least 1 GB of RAM.

With that said, I'm going to delay deployment of MS Office '07 to the rest of the firm as long as possible because I don't want to hear 80+ users complaining.

have you tried the simple things like disk cleanup and defragment?

Those are some of the first things I tried before turning to Tek-Tips.
