Have a strange problem with Excel. Opening any excel document, when you select a cell you cannot de-select it and moving the mouse about highlights all cells you drag the mouse over. Cannot quit excel, select any menus, icons or other worksheets. Have to do CTRL,ALT and DEL to crash out.
This is running on a laptop with Win XP - no service packs loaded onto Excel as there is a link with another program called Hyperion.
Can anyone help?!

If you see ADD on the right side of status bar - you are in ADD mode, press SHIFT and F8 to switch it off.

Thanks for responding but that doesn't seem to be the problem. When you select one cell, you do not have to hold the mouse buttons down for all the rest of the cells to highlight, just move your mouse around the sheet and it keeps the original cell selected and highlights all the others. You cannot deselect or do anything. It happens on new excel docs and already existing ones making excel unusable. Checked that the ADD mode is not on and it isn't.

Do you by any chance see EXT in the status bar which would indicate you are in extended mode, and if so then just hit F8 to toggle out of it. Failing that have you tried updating the mouse driver.

Did hitting F8 solve this problem, I have the same problem and it is driving me crazy trying to fix it, so far I have gone the long way round a tried a repair and a clean install of office but with no joy.

Thank you for your advice. In the end the laptop in question was wiped due to all sort of other errors so cannot test your suggestions. However, I have noted these down for when this happens the next time!

Thank you for your assistance

Ok,

What solved it for me was pressing ALT and ESC Excel was then fine once again. Oh, and I updated the mouse drivers for good measure! :)

Hi, does anyone have any other ideas on this? I have tried all the above with no joy!

I have switched out the mouse for a newer model and updated the drivers. Seem's to have done the trick.

Cheers
