On our one and only server, the event viewer logs the following under Netlogon when booting up or restarting the Netlogon service:

Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed because no DNS servers are available.

I've looked at DNS and the service is up and running and I can open up the DNS snap-in and it appears to be fully operational. The server is pointing to it's loopback address for the DNS server. DHCP is allocating addresses out correctly with the addresses pointing it would seem at the correct address.

At the same time, we can't add any of our workstations to the domain, they come back with "domain does not exist or could not be contacted" and the workstations that are on the domain take ages to log in and then fail to map any of the hime drives or find the profiles on the server. I don't know enough about DNS yet so I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks for your help.

When you say it is pointing to its loopback address, you don't mean the 127.0.0.1 do you? Matt Wray

Hi mattwray,

Yes that's it. I thought it shouldn't be but that's the way it got configured when running DCPROMO. I did remove it but it returned on a reboot. Should I change it?

In case you're wondering, I couldn't log in so I had to come up with a new name Callahan=Targen.

I am far from a guru, but on my server DNS points to its own ip address as well as on the DHCP scope. I don't think the loopback address would work, that may be your problem...

Hi Mattwray,
Thanks for the suggestion, didn't fix it though. An update on the problem. I reinstalled the server (sick of the grief it was giving me).
The problem stands like this
1 machine = Win2K Adv Server
1 machine = XP Pro
1 machine = Win2K Pro

I can join both machines to the domain but when I come to log them on I am told that the domain is not available. Now, I can log on locally to each of the machines and then am able to access all of the shares on the server but obviously not the other machine as it is also logged on locally. I've stopped and restarted Net Logon which didn't work. The only thing that appears in the System Log of the Event Viewer is the following.
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: NETLOGON
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5781
Date: 16/02/2002
Time: 22:23:04
User: N/A
Computer: COMPUTERNAME
Description:
Dynamic registration or deregistration of one or more DNS records failed because no DNS servers are available.

I am beginning to pull my hair out, so any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks.

You should still be able to access shares on any machine on the network as long as it is part of the domain. The network I run is very small (6 WIN2k pros and 2 WIN2k servers) and all the users have their setups locally from before the DC was introduced. They simply have to supply a usename and password that is registered in active directory to browse other machines shares. Did you create user accounts in AD? Matt Wray

Fixed it!
After 9 hours, yes 9 hours. I finally realized why it couldn't see the domain and it was something to do with DNS. I won't explain it here as it's too much to write but if anyone is interested, or has a similar problem, e-mail me on Jack_Frost_22@yahoo.com and I would be happy to e-mail you the proceedure I used.
Thanks for all your efforts!

Callahan.
