I have several POP users on our exchange 2003, When the user sends a message to an incorrect email address or whatever, The NDR comes back to that account from systems administrator but, the user gets a message in outlook during a send/receive stating there is an unknown error with the mail server and cannot download any new messages (bottom right hand corner).

The user calls me and right now as a workaround, I log into the exchange account (on my machine) where the NDR shows up and delete it from their account. The user can then pop again.

In the event log on the server, Event ID 1023 shows up "error rendering message" and that doesn't really lead anywhere.

This happens quite regularly on new client machines as well as old clients.

Has anyone experienced this, I can't seem to find anything that references it.

(FYI using exchange 2003 sp2 with IMF)

help

According to MS: "This error can appear if Outlook clients that are connecting to the Exchange 2000 server are configured with both the Internet E-mail and Microsoft Exchange Server services in the same client profile.

thanks for the response, but that's not the case. They only have one profile set up for popping.

Is there an error code in the body of the event? Can you post the entire event?

I guess this site won't let me post the screen capture but here is the jist of it:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: POP3SRC
Event Category: Content Engine
Event ID: 1023
Date:
Time:
User: N/A
Computer: SERVER
Description:
Error 0x800700003 occurred while rendering message 0001-00000309635e for download for user user@email.com

According to Microsoft, "This is an occasional timing error caused by not locking the mailbox during use. This can be safely ignored unless these errors occur frequently."

Upon clicking the hyperlink in the event I get redirected to MS, but doesn't help much. As soon as it happens again I'll post that link as well. (I have already cleared my event log)

This is where I get redirected, but after going through the solutions several times still get the problem...
