Ethernet Powerline and routers

Ethernet powerline looks like a great option for me. I see that you need two gadgets for it to work, but I wonder can't the same be done with a router? Can't I just get an additional router, likely install some custom firmware, put it in my room and have it work as an ethernet powerline adapter? Isn't it possible?
 
Signal levels and working with 120vac are significant differences. What you would be proposing would be more like unplugging the AC circuit breaker and using the romex cable for phone service and DSL.
