Can you run etherchannel with stp disabled? I do not have any redundant links between switches so spanning-tree is off. I tried to set up etherchannel between some 2948g's and a 2948g-L3. I did not have any success. Any suggestions?

Why would you want to do this? and I dont think you could anyways as Etherchannel has 2 or more ports tied to the second switch. I know Etherchannel handles overriding STP normal action of blocking ports.. the protocol's name escapes me right now.. Port aggregate something ?

no you cant, etherchannel uses stp for setup and maintaining. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I thought Etherchannel used Port aggregation protocol to dynamically enable channels. Anyway, I would never recommend turning off spannning tree.

Also, the 2948G-L3 sees every port as a routed interface. Did you set up a bridge group (I think that's what they're called) so that both ports on the L3 switch are in the same VLAN? If not, I doubt that Etherchannel will work.

Yass is correct... Spanning has nothing to do with setting up etherchannel other then making sure there is not a loop. In fact, spanning tree only sees ONE link with etherchannel.. not the bundle.

Oh man, I HATE being wrong, but in this case, I am definitely wrong. I got this quote right off the Cisco website at
-----------------------------------
Fast EtherChannel does not require the use of 802.1D Spanning-Tree Protocol (STP) to maintain topology state within the channel; rather it uses a peer-to- peer control protocol that provides autoconfiguration and sub-second convergence times for parallel links, yet allows higher-level protocols such as STP, or existing routing protocols, to maintain topology.

Tmbenne, if as you say there are no redundant links then there would be no problem in disabling STP. (Providing Cisco allowed this which they obviously do not).
Next time you need to procure some switches take a look at other offerings on the market that actually allow the user some functionality and diversity.

:::functionality and diversity::: read this as more ways for a user to get into trouble and pay us the big bucks to get them out of trouble ;-)....ok..ok.. I can wish.. it IS the season to be jolly :)
