I am using mofcomp -check to make sure the syntax is OK in my modified sms_def.mof file and it reports the following error. Any suggestions? What exactly does this error mean?

Parsing MOF file: sms_def.mof
sms_def.mof (3268): error SYNTAX 0X008f: Alias cannot be used twice
Compiler returned error 0x8f

My mof file can be emailed to anyone for inspection.

Thanks!

Yes, please post of email the MOF file. I have lots of experience with MOFs.

I got this one during my MOF creations, and it was caused by some incorrect syntax. Sounds like one of the class/attribute/values is stepping on itself.

Actually, I managed to get it all worked out. I had messed up the syntax.

Thanks anyway.

BTW - Is the WMI SDK the only source out there for MOF information, or have you found another?

Thanks.

Another excellent resource is a Word document on MS's web site: "Advanced SMS 2 Reporting".

Unfortunately, there's not a whole lot of good info on creating MIFs and MOFs. Basically, trial and error.

Hope you have a decent lab to play with! s-)

Speaking of mof's, whenever I try to install SMS 2.0 on NT4.0, I get "can't complile" messages on all mof's. Any ideas.

Are you saying that you can't install SMS at all, meaning that you are having a problem installing the SMS server piece on a Windows NT server? Make sure all minumum requirements are met.

Or, are you getting that error from MOFCOMP? If so, you could have a syntax error. What is the error code associated with the message? Look it up at MSDN's library and it will provide an English translation of the error code.

The problem was I was installing SMS on a server with SP6. It seems with 5 or higher, you need a patch, I think it's an updated WMI executable. After installing the patch, SMS loaded fine. Thanks for the responses.
