My internet connection (bt broadband via a usb modem) on a winxp pro machine has stopped working and i tried to renew the ip address using ipconfig/renew and recieved the error:
"the operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"

I have tried running winsockfix.exe, as recommended by someone, which has not had any effect. Any recommendations as to the cause of this problem and perhaps a fix?

Any help would be appreciated.

GlenJohnson,

. run WinsockFix. Test.
. if no joy, ignore the registry edits, but follow this section of MS KB: the relevant section quote here:

Note Restart the computer after you run WinsockFix. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for the Winsock keys. If you do not restart the computer after you run the Winsockfix, the next step does not work correctly.

Step 2: Install TCP/IP
Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
Click Install.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.
Click Have Disk.
Type C:\Windows\inf, and then click OK.
On the list of available protocols, click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click OK.
Restart the computer.

Thanks for the post. Unfortunatley it has not resolved the problem.

I think I have isolated the problem from another forum though. It is strange because i am getting assigned an ip address from my isp, can ping by ip address or unresoved dns names, can ping my dns server, but cannot surf via browser and get the above message when trying to release or renew. It is strange because the surfing is in fact intermittent. My last steps were as follows: reinstalled operating system (ie replaced existing files as opposed to clean install), reinstalled dsl modem and software, ran winsockfix, reinstalled tcpip and screamed when same problem occured.

The only thing that can be the problem is maybe the network adapter driver has been corrupted and is not replaced even by upgrading the operating system.

Below is my final step before i stop having anything to do with computers and go to live on a farm.........!

POTENTIAL FIX........

Well I've fixed my problem, just by experimenting a bit! This seems to be a fairly common one so take note everyone with the same error on Internet Explorer - just uninstall your network adapter driver (it gets reinstalled automatically, without requiring the Windows CD):

I remembered back to Windows 95 days when IP connections used to get screwed up occasionally and would be fixed by uninstalling and reinstalling the IP driver. Well XP doesn't let you do this (the button is greyed out) but it does let you do the same for the Network Adapter.

So this is what I did:

1. Load Control Panel/Network and Internet Connections/Network Connections

2. Right click Local Area Connection/Properties

3. Under the General tab, click the Configure... button. This brings up the Properties window for the Ethernet adapter.

4. Click to the Driver tab, and click the Uninstall button.

I was very surprised when my internet connection continued to work after doing this, I was expecting to have to reinstall it. I was even more surprised when I rebooted and it continued to work, even though Network Properties said I had no LAN connection.

But then after the second reboot I was confronted with the Create New Connection wizard. I clicked through the process of setting up a new Internet connection, but then when I got to the end it said there was a problem setting up my new connection. However there isn't - it works great, and I no longer have the annoying Work Offline/Try Again button and am able to download streaming audio/video from the web with Media Player, just like I should!
