When i set up a user in my domain with a user id and password and configure all the standard setting in my SBS 2003 Server, I manually ahve to set the SMTP and X400 up. I thought this was done for you? Anyways once i finish assigning all of this i go to the computer that the suer will be using and try and open up outlook. When i open up outlook 2003 for the first time i get an error saying that the user cannot be found in the address book (GAL list) I attempted to send an email on my computer and never got a bounce back however i can;t open up his e-mail on this computer. why not and should it take this long?

Are you using the SBS wizards to create the user, or are you doing it manually in the Active Directory Users and Computers. In SBS, the wizard is the best tool, as weird as that may seem. There are some things in SBS that break when you don't use the wizard, even though you are treating it just like you would another non-SBS system.

I did use the wizard however it didn't create the e-mail address then i configure it manually.

How long does it take for an e-mail address to show in a GAL list

There is a problem in SBS 2003 not creating email accounts if you do not have Exchange 2003 SP1 installed.

After installing SP1 you will also need to install the hotfix for SBS MSKB 843539.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

I don;t ahve the Excahnge SP1 installed yet however this was never an issue before.

The GAL gets recreated every 12 hours. You can use the Exchange System Manager to manually force GAL rebuild. Then on your Outlook client, a simple send/receive should suffice to sync your local address book. See if things show up then.

As far as having to create the accounts manually, that's part of the problem described in this KB article:

It wants you to intstall Exchange 2003 SP1 or restart your information store (or other relevant Exchange service) as a short-term workaround.

This is a 'creep up on you' problem. Not one that will happen right out of the box. I know that it's frustrating when it used to work fine...

interesting issues sounds like your right...Thanks however i you would be so kind maybe you inlighten me on another issue. I have a user that his email is alan bartter in the GAL list i want this to be Alan Bartter for some reason his is all lower case how can i change this and were can i change this?

On your server that is running Exchange, open up Active Directory Users and Computers, get properties on that user, and look at every tab and make sure that none use lower-case.
