This may be a DCOM rights issue where the backup service account does not have rights to attach to the WMI Service. I have been getting this error message recently. Just today I have noticed that I am also getting a DCOM error in the system event log every night during the backup window. I have adjusted my default DCOM rights and will see if this eliminates the problem.

Adjusting the DCOM rights turned out to be the fix for me. I added the local System account and Administrators to the Default Access Permissions under the Default Security tab. You can run the DCOM configuration program as dcomcnfg in the run command.
Also, try doing a manual WMI backup under the computer manager - Services and Applications - WMI Control - properties - Backup/Restore tab. This will tell you whether you have an overall WMI issue.
