An error occurred while renewing interface local area connection the system cannot find the file specified


has anyone seen this error message and mentioned it here...I am curious to know what steps have been taken to resolve this..

Thanks guys I really appreciate all that you have done. I have read over all the threads and links so far based on what you have given...It seems that they all boil down to you promtpting "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" follow by "ipconfig /renew again and if unsucessful in that then proceeding to "How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP". When I troubleshoot ISP subscribers it sucks to tell them its time to Re-install..reason being they normally are scarred to do it on there own or they expect us to help..and unfortunately its my job to keep them connected to the internet but not be there personal computer specialist... So, basically I am looking for something that might be an internal fix in the OS without resorting to a reinstall... I have run across several subscribers where the "netsh....." works but have run across some where it works not and its those work nots I am tryin to fix so that I can help...If you find anything else on this subject it would trully be appreciated...

A reinstallation of XP is not warranted for this error.

1. Use a utility to repair the Winsock service stack:

I have taken your advice when XP and 2000 have the socket error issue and it works..so you are sayin this works for this error also....ok..I will look into this..my follow up question would be...where could I direct subs so that they can get the tool if they are only using one pc and dont have accest to this link...not tryin to suggest you are a problem solver as well..but a suggestion based on your experiences and threads might help me to get these subs in the right direction...cause we all know they are terrified when you blame Microsoft as if there should be no reason for there OS to have ever had a problem.

If there is no access, not even the local library or a friend's house, to another PC, then the procedure that has a 10% chance of working is to do a netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

The only alternative to that is to reinstall XP.

If they have another XP machine without internet access, they can:

1. Export the Winsock and Winsock2 registry keys to a floppy disk for the "good" XP;

2. Delete the keys on the "bad" PC and import them from the floppy disk.

3. Show all hidden devices in Device Manager, and uninstall existing network adapters. Leave the WAN mini-port devices alone.

4. Reboot. Let XP discover and reinstall any valid network adapters.

5. netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

6. Reboot.
