I am new at this so please bear with me.

I just got rid of a nasty virus.
Now when I first turn on the computer I get a message box which reads "RegSvr32" at the top, then "No DLL name specified" along with:

REGSVR32
usage:regsvr32[/v][/s] dllname
/u unregister server
/s silent, display no message boxes
/c console output

Then, on top of this message box, I get another one which reads "syntax Error in parameters".

After I say OK to both boxes, everything seems normal and works properly. How can I get rid of these error messages without dumping my hard drive? Thanks.

Sounds as if something is unsuccessfully trying to load at startup. Go to Start > Run, type msconfig and hit enter. See what is listed under the startup tab and try disabling (by unchecking) anything that is unfamiliar or nonessential.

The following link is an MS knowledgebase article dealing with regsvr32

Get Mike Lin's startup program at:

It works on all OS's and displays whats trying to load at startup both from the startup folder and the registry where I suspect your problem lies. You can turn things on and off which become effective at the next reboot. It probably ranks in the top 10 of the most useful pieces of software ever. Better still, its freeware.

I tried to download Mike Lin's program as suggested, but it asked me what to use to open it. I mistakenly used MS Works, and now I can't open it in anything else. MS Works just makes it garbage-y.

got to your windows explorer, tools, folder options, file types and search for that files association. When you find it edit then highlight open and edit that. browse for what you want to use to open that particular file and then your done after you ok'd it exit out of the file types and go back to that file and run it if it pops up with what do you want to use to open the file make sure you are checking whatever program opens it i.e winzip or whatever handler you have.

What happens if I do as you say and can't find the files association?

Download this tiny app..It will create two text files on your desktop
Startup.log and Stubpath.txt

Post Startup.log if you cannot find error producing startup element.

The current version of regsrv32.dll for Win98 is 5.0.1641.1
I don't have System File Checker but you could run it to see if your current version matches.
Several viruses damage this file. If it is corrupted extract a clean copy.

you would create the file extension by going to new then creating that file type extension then editing that extension and adding the handler for that extension
normally it will ask what you want to use to open that file you can then add the opener again

Looking back a couple of posts, I wonder if treasurespast is having trouble installing Mike Lin's control panel applet. Extract the StartupCPL.msi file from the StartupCPL.zip file you downloaded. Right-click StartupCPL.msi and select "Install". Once you've got it installed, you can delete the .msi file.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the tips, but you have to remember, you're "talking" to a tek dummy!

When I go to I automatically launch into Microsoft Works. I don't know how to stop this from happening. The same thing happens when I try to go to I can't seem to get anywhere, and I don't know if any of this will fix my original problem, which was error boxes that come up at Windows 98 start up. Can anyone try to help me in dummy terms? Thanks everyone!

In Windows Explorer ,or My Computer , click the file you want to open.

Press and hold down the SHIFT key while you use the right mouse button to click the file, and then click Open With on the menu that appears.

Click the program you want to use to open the file, and then click OK .

NOTE: If you click to select the "Always use this program to open this type of file" check box before you click OK, the association for the file is changed to the new program you select. Select this check box only if you want to change the default association for the file type.

Create a shortcut to the program you want to use in the Windows\SendTo folder. This lets you click the file with the right mouse button, click Send To, and then click the program you want to use to open the file. For additional information about adding items to the SendTo folder, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Link works fine...Have you tried just clicking on it while in this thread?

File is Startup.log and download should start soon as you open link....

Try link from within this thread....just click it..

Your right...!
Your link does not work...Ours DO..No copying or pasting necessary, just go to links supplied in cazulp's post for that file, and if you wish to compare go to MY message and link from there. smitee

Don't know if I have anything to open it from. Will pkunzip work? I get a message in DOS that reads "inflating: readme.txt" and then it says it's finished. I did manage to get the "startupcpl" icon on my desktop, but when I click it, it just tries to open in MS Works again.
