[tt]hello all, I need help with an error I'm getting:

Error

The system can not log you on due to the following error:

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted

I did not noticed where it asked me for a domain name. Can anyone assist me on this?

Thanks in advanced

Are there any further errors in your Event Viewer? Is this a Stand Alone machine or are you connected to a Network?

You can get to the Event Viewer via right click My Computer icon and select Manage.

Any errors logged in the Event Viewer can be expanded by double clicking on the error line.

[tt]Thanks for your reply linney,

This is a stand alone machine (at home)

And I'm unable to view the desktop, the problem lies the initial screen where account for the machine are created. I created one account to be used (but no password was asked) then when the system boots to the login screen, It shows the account I created but when I type the password it does not recognize it and the error pops up.

Have you set a "blank" password? What happens if you just leave box blank and press Enter?

I just tried it and I get this:

Is Norton Security involved on your machine?

[tt]
I'll try starting it in safe mode, see if I'm able. No Norton security involved. This is a brand new hard drive I bought yesterday...

Found the problem guys, well actually my son fixed the problem. He reformatted the brand new hardrive and created the system administrator fixing the problem.

Thanks all for you input...

What does "created the system administrator" mean? You started over and created an account called system administrator? Any specific capitalization required? I thought admin was the account that NT created. Details would help. I've been through 1.5 days of hell installing windows XP on formatted drived. I got a new motherboard/CPU even and I finally get the damn thing installed and now this! Thankfully, my main linux server/desktop is of course working fine or I'd really be incensed.

Perhaps you specified a domain controller when you first installed XP, follow this first link.

Q822795 "The Specified Domain Does Not Exist or Cannot Be Contacted" Error Message After You Install Windows XP and Restart
The above article has been "pulled", it would have been handy to know what it had to say!

Did anyone ever find out what TonyU meant by the phrase "created the system administrator"?

It means that he originally selected Domain when he installed XP, so he reformatted and re-installed and specified nothing.

Then he could use his default Administrator logon without worrying about a Domain controller to authenticate him.

Where do you get the option to select "Domain"? I've just done a clean install of XP Home on a Gateway laptop, and I didn't see that option anywhere.....

Home in theory can't join a domain, it is probably just a XP Pro option.

I got the issue resolved, but I didn't really have a chance to analyze why. The resolution involved formatting the hard drive in FAT32 mode, installing Windows XP Home on that partition, and then converting it to NTFS after the installation was complete. During the several hours of researching the problem, I noticed some Microsoft articles that referenced network cards being related to this problem, so that may have something to do with it, although that doesn't really explain why formatting in FAT32 resolved it. The particular hardware I was dealing with was a Gateway 420D laptop with a built-in Intel NIC.

I am offering my scenario and what I had to do to fix it. I had the same error after a new installation of XP over a damaged one. The install went well, but I never received any questions during the install about my name, if it was in a domain, what my admin password should be. The system continued merrily along and finally finished and booted to the login screen. At this point I got the infamous login message:
"The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted." No matter what password I typed, or whether I booted to safemode or not.

I had installed a NIC card (Belkin) recently before all of this happened and decided to remove it so that XP would not think about installing TCP/IP during the install. I then re-installed XP and then I got all of those wonderful questions that I never got before.

So, I guess the fix is to re-install XP again until it gets it right. Great Huh?

I don't know if this is a bug with XP, but it sure wasted my day.

fwiw - i've got this before when installing XP on a puter that didn't have a NIC driver loaded, or there was a problem with it not obtaining an IP during a once-in-a-lifetime refresh of my router IP from my ISP. Solution? Log in as admin, rename the computer while in a workgroup, fix the IP problem (reboot router), enable DHCP, re-join the domain with the correct gateway IP.

just my 2¢
