I get the following message when exiting from Word 2000 running under Windows 2000 professional.
_________________________________________________________________

Program Error

WINWORD.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.
_________________________________________________________________
Clean bill of health from Norton WinDoctor and no viruses from the latest NAV definitions. Updated the program portion of NAV 2002 and uninstalled WinFax - both known conflicts with Word.

The program error started after one of the following events, 1) running Speed Disk, or 2) uninstalling and then reinstalling Adobe Acrobat 5.0.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

As a fisrt step, find Normal.dot and rename it or delete it and see what happens.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work.

Before you do this, do a print screen of all tabs under Tools, Options for Word or record somewhere all the options selected.

Make sure no apps are running.

Go to Start,Run and type regedit; click OK.

Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Word\Data

Go to Edit, Delete.

Click Yes when you get asked:
Are you sure you want to delete this key?

On the Registry menu, click Exit.

You may lose the most recently used file list on the File menu and some of the settings that you may have customized under Tools, Options

I would recommend getting the next service release for Office 2000.

gibber17,

As a side note to xlhelp's suggestion above regarding the registry, I'd suggest that you "export" the ..\\word\data key first (say to the desktop for easy retrieval) then delete it from the registry. This way you can recover the information if needed (i.e. if Murphy decides to pay you a visit).

Also Office 2000 has a Detect and Repair function under the Help menu in the core apps, try this option to repair items in the Office Suite.

What did the error log state?

Try cleaning your pc as well, reference the link below:
(Thanks Anne.)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your responses. Before I proceed, I wanted to know if the equation changes now that I get the same message when exiting from Excel?

Yes, it does.

I would first go to Start, Settings, Add/Remove Programs, Micrsosoft Office 2000, click on Change button and repair office.

Have tried both Detect and Repair from the Help section in Word and Change under Add/Remove in Settings and am still getting the same error message.

Two additional pieces to the puzzle; a) the Excel error occurs when exiting Excel after having opened a file, the Word error occurs when exiting Word independent of a file having been opened, and b) both programs no longer update the list of recently opened files under the File dropdown menu.

Thanks.

two suggestions:

replace mso9.dll with one form a good system.

Have you installed the latest service pack?

beyond that I don't know.

Tried copying mso9.dll from the installation CD but that struck out also. Will research the latest service pack for Office 2000. .

Am unfamiliar with error logs, potentially useful information there? Thanks.

The solution was Adobe Acrobat 5.05, a free upgrade from 5.0. Thanks to everyone for your interest and suggestions.

You may still continue to get the message at some point. We had the same thing happening in Excel and tried everything. We searched over at and found the solution. It was Norton that was causing it and all we had to do was make one adjustment in Norton and we never got the message again!

I am sorry I can't remember what it was cuz it was a while ago but you can certainly find the solution there again. We had updated all the software, including Adobe Acrobat (we have the full-blown program, not just the reader) and nothing worked.

That site is a great one for help as well: **Quiquid latine dictum sit altum viditur.**
