Hi All

I was wondering if anyone had come across this error when enabling OSPF on a Cisco 2503 router.

I've included a copy of the show version output in cas eit helps. A friend said that this might be because there is not enough memory available, but this router has previous run OSPF when it was a production router. All I have done since putting it in my test lab is upgrade the IOS.

All help gratefully received.

Paul

The current IOS you are running requires 16 MB Flash and 10 MB RAM, but you have 16MB Flash and only 8MB RAM.

Therefore you dont have enough memory, and are getting memory failure.

You will need to downgrade your IOS.

Would using the same IOS revision, but without the isakmp stuff give me neough memory free, or would I need to allow for some "breathing" space.

The highest you can go is IP Plus version of 12.1.18.

One thing you might want to check is that the interfaces you have OSPF on are not in "shutdown" mode... I've run into similar problems with IOS versions where it would not start up the OSPF process because i forgot to enable the interface. (ie. do a "no shut" on the interfaces)

I would have to agree with the other comments though...
Having 16Mb of flash is great on this router, but only
8Mb of RAM can be rough. You might be able to upgrade
the ram with standard 72pin SIMMS with parity on them.

Just a thought.

Thanks for all the help. I've downgraded one of the routers to IOS version 12.0(24) which has enabled me to get OSPF running between two of the routers. The third one in my lab is being a bit awkward and not allowing me to downgrade it.

I'll try again tomorrow, but it seems to be having an issue with accepting the changes to the config-register settings prior to pulling the image from the TFTP server.

Ah well I now have two routers talking through OSPF and then two talking through RIP - different I suppose.
