Hi,
I am using MS Project 2007 and trying to create a visual report. I get an error message
" An unknown error has occurred.
An error occurred and the requested action could not be completed at this time."
when project is " Building local OLAP cubes...". I performed the following steps.

1. Open the Master Project Plan.
2. Click on the Reports and select Visual Reports.
3. Click on "New Template" tab
4. Select "Excel" as the application
5. Select "Assignment Usage" from the drop-down menu
6. Click on the "Field Picker"
7. Removed all the entries in the "Selected Fields" column.
8. Added "Work". "Resource Available From" and "Resource Available To"
9. Click the "O.K" button.
10. While building the report, i get this error message.

thanks
Robert

Can you run the visual report on a single project -- not the consolidated project?

Hi Julie,

I don't get the error message when building the visual report for a single project plan. I just now tried once again from the Master Project Plan, but got the same error message. Is the error because i selected " Link to project" when inserting the individual plan into the Master Project Plan?

thanks
Robert

I don't really know what the cause of the error is. If you can create the Visual Report on a single project plan, it doesn't sound like the system itself is in trouble. Can you run the report on the master project if you decrease the level of detail in the report -- for example instead of selecting "Weeks" in the "Select level of usage data to include" do you have any better luck?

Hi Julie,

I have all the options in the " Select Level of usage data to include in the report", but i get the same error message.

thanks
Robert.

I am able to generate the report, if i select "Resource Usage" instead of "Assingment Usage".

Okay, stepping back. What SP do you have applied to Project 2007? It should be to SP-3. How many inserted projects are you working with? Are they all stored in the same directory? Can you recreate the master project and add one file at a time to help isolate where the error is?

I am using MS Project 2007 SP2. Is there an SP3 available?
I have inserted 5 projects into the Master Plan and each of these are stored in different paths on the server. I have the Master Project Plan on my desktop.
O.k I will try to create a Master Plan, by adding 1 project at a time.

thanks
Robert.

Hi Julie,

I created a new Master Project and performed the following steps.

1. Inserted the 1st project
2. Created the Visual Report (Assignment Usage) as indicated earlier in my post - No error message.
3. Inserted the 2nd project
4. Repeated Step 2 - No error message.
5. Inserted the 3rd project
6. Repeated Step 2 - No error message.
7. Inserted the 4th project
8. Repeated Step 2 - No error message.
9. Inserted the 5th project
10. Repeated Step 2 - No error message.

After step 10, i observed in the Gantt Chart that each individual project was in a "collapsed" state. So i expanded each project and tried to create the visual report. I got the error message. I then once again collapsed all the projects and re-tried to generate the report, but got the same error message.

Kindly provide me the SP3 link, so that i can update and check if this is sorted out.

thanks
Robert.

You're welcome, Robert. Start with ensuring you are up to date on all service packs and then try the rebuild again.
