I'm getting the error message "Can't Print the Illustration" when trying to print a file from Adobe Illustator 10. The image is kind of complicated with drop shadows and blurs. I don't think this really could be the problem. Any light shed onto this subject would be very helpful.

here is text from the manual...

Printing gradients, gradient mesh objects, color blends, and transparencies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Files with gradients, gradient mesh objects, or color blends can be difficult for some printers to print smoothly (without discrete bands of color) or at all. There are ways to improve the printed results of gradients, gradient meshes, and color blends on such printers. You can also improve the way that transparencies are printed.

Follow these general guidelines:

Use a blend that changes at least 50% between two or more process color components.
Use shorter blends. The optimum length depends on the colors in your blend, but try to keep blends shorter than 7.5 inches. (See Calculating the maximum blend length based on the color change.)
Use lighter colors or make dark blends short. Banding is most likely to occur between very dark colors and white.
Use an appropriate line screen that retains 256 levels of gray.
When the document contains complex artwork, transparencies, gradients, gradient meshes, or blends, make sure that you have selected the right resolution and Quality/Speed settings in the Document Setup dialog box. For information, see Changing resolution and rasterization settings for complex or transparent artwork.

I'm JohnSmith,I've decided to join this forum because it's pretty helpful.

I got it to print once and that was a low resolution, but when I tried to print it again, it came back with this error message. I think what i'm going to do try is try to Rasturize the whole project. So my 5.5 meg file will turn into a 500 meg file. Oh well! I don't care just as long as I get it to print. You would think adobe would fix a problem like this. Because you can make some pretty interesting things now with all those drop shadows and stuff.

Still anyone have any other suggests on how to get around this error message?

Im afraid it just plain takes alot of overhead to pull off those effects. It is really some pretty brilliant code, but its young and needs some growing up. Your best bet is to save and restart every once in a while because of how bad windows paging is, its not adobe you should see AI on a mac, it actually works. BEHOLD! So your saying all I have to do is go to a MAC and my illustration will probably print out fine? Hmmmmm???? I don't have a MAC, but kinko's does. Thanks for the information.

LOL, im afraid 90% percent of my answers are "Buy a Mac". In fact, try responding with that everytime someone asks you a question no matter where you are and see if the world doesnt become a better place :) BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!

I had the same probem with illustrator 10. It worked again when I disabled the `bitmap printing` option in the print form.
Hope this helps

Didn't try that yet, forget when I get home = )[bigsmile]
