I am trying to set up an IBM Proprinter 4039 on my SCO 5.0.5 system. I set it up and am able to print from the # prompt, but when I reboot and go into scoadmin printer, I get the message that the local print services are disabled. When I go into 'Systm->Print Services' and enable it - it goes fine. Why won't it hold that setting? Am I missing a step? I have the printer set up as default and it shows up as soon as I enable Local/Netware Print Service. Wendy

You didn't mention if you had installed RS505A (not what comes on the CD- tI mean he supplement from ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/openserver5/rs505a/) - I know there were some printing related issues fixed there And oss497c put new printer related binaries in.

Also you mentioned Netware? What (if anything) does this have to do with it?

If none of that makes sense, does it hold if you ONLY use command line tools: /usr/lib/lpshut, /usr/lib/lpsched to restart, lpstat -t to see status, etc ? IOW, is it scoadmin that is disabling it or is it the act of printing to it?

yes, it does hold when I do the info you said. The Netware was just what printer services says under enable printer services. I an using the system in single user mode. I am not real familiar with unix - learned enough to build a new system and install sco and the software I needed to recover from a dead hd and old ibm system. I have not installed RS505A - my internet connection is with windows - could I download it and install it? Wendy

Oh, you shouldn't be using it in single user mode- that is for maintenance, it doesn't mean that you use it when you are the sole user.

Install the recomended patches and supplements and go multi-user.

You can download with Windows- just make sure you set binary mode if you use ftp. See if you need to transfer by floppy disk.

You might find helpful also.

How do I get to the # or $ command without starting out in the SCO login shell. I have been logging in at the Conrol D prompt so it doesn't go to the shell. When I do that I am in the single user mode. Also, how do I exit out of the login screen and get back to the # prompt. I am very used to the dot prompt in DOS and prefer working there instead of a shell. Besides, the print is way too small in the shell for me. Wendy

Hold the Control Key, then press and hold ALT, then press F1 (or F2, F3, F4..)

If you want to go back to the GUI, press ALT-F2 (you only need CTRL while in the GUI).. If you are on F1, press ALT-F3 to switch to a character login on F3, ALT-F1 to go back to what you were doing on F1, etc.

To stop the GUi from starting permanently, use "scologin disable". To run it from any login, type "startx".
