My OS is Win98SE. Usually older Win95 cdroms run ok. I have one which comes up with "This prog has performed an illegal op - invalid page fault... at ...." - it then lists registers. Anyone got any ideas please?

What is the exact text of the error message, including 'Details'?

Try updating the drivers for the CDROM. You go to the MFG, web page and download updated drivers

Thank you guys.

Nothing useful showed up for "cafe95" or cafe95.exe in a google search.

If the problem happens with only the one CD, then either do a search on your HD for cafe95.exe and replace it if possible, or just do not use that CD.

I would check my CPU fan and make sure you are not getting and over heating pobelm. The error message and error from virtual memory access. It could also be your memory is going RAM is going out or bad.

There is a softrware called docmem that will test your memory read and write capability. Run the software for a few hours and see if its see if your memory workiing fine or not. Check it ot at
Or if your are suspecting your hdd you can check out the diagnostic tool from the respective hdd manufacturer here at

Thank you all.
Just realised- I said cdrom. I get the error message when I try to run a specific data CD in either nof my cdroms (D & E).
Sorry for the mistake.

See if the problematic CD will run in Safe mode.
But you'll have to do the following in order to access the CD-ROM drive in that mode:
-Copy both the oakcdrom.sys file(located in C:\Windows\Command\EBD) and the mscdex.exe file
(located in C:\Windows\Command) to the C:\ root folder.
-Go to Start/Run, type sysedit in the box, click OK, type LH c:\mscdex.exe /D:IDECD1 in the autoexec.bat window, close the autoexec.bat window, type device=c:\oakcdrom.sys /D:IDECD1 in the config.sys window, and close System Config. Editor.
-Restart the computer, press and hold the CTRL key, select 'Command prompt only' from the startup menu, press Enter, at the C:\> prompt type win/d:m, and press Enter to start Safe mode.
You will now be able to use your CD-ROM drive in Safe mode.

If it works in Safe mode, then go to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK/Startup, and uncheck any boxes that have cafe95 or cafe95.exe in them.

Thanks for all your help - I now have another problem.!!
I recently got hold of a P2 350 to set up as a back up unit and set win98as thge operating system. Although I have hardly anything on the hard disk it takles for ever to load up the win 98 screen. I have done the usual msconfig and remove start up items . No joy. Any ideas please ?
