thanks

i double checked and both the .htaccess file and the .htpasswd file are in the protected directory.

Perhaps a syntax error. Could you post the .htaccess file? Were there any errors on creation of the .htpasswd file? You can view that with a text editor, it should look something like:

user:94u0943tanoin82$@#^$

I was able to make the .htaccess file and there where no errors in the htpasswd file the user name is right and the password is encrypted... do i need to configure a file like httpd.conf ??

thanks

httpd.conf has several lines that reference this, not sure if they come ready-to-use or if they're remmed out:

AllowOverride Authconfig

Order allow,deny
Allow from all

AccessFileName .htaccess

The syntax of the .htaccess file under Windows is different from unix; Windows syntax requires double-quotes and the explicit path:

AuthUserFile "C:/Apache Group/Apache/htdocs/domain/protected/.htpasswd"
AuthGroupFile /null
AuthName "Restricted Area"
AuthType Basic

<Limit GET POST>
require valid-user
