IE ERROR Message: "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator."

I get this message when I goto Tools Internet Options
I can get to Properties if I right click the IE Desktop icon.

I noticed it right after a website added a bunch of Favorites to my list and changed my home page. Ran virus scan (McAfee, Panda and InoculateIT) and found nothing. Upgraded IE 5.5 to IE 6.0 and still have the problem. Everything else on the pc seems to run fine (Win98).

probably something copied into your reg.....
run regedit and go to here...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

also check here for dodgey keys....

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Dont delete anything if you dont know what you are doing...
if you see anything odd post it here first...

(to run regedit, go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit enter)

Abe,

Do a search in the registry for NoFolderOptions and NoBrowserOptions and delete them both.

For future problems:
Do a search in the registry for a key named restrictions under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer key and delete it. Then reboot your machine and add the key back and lock your homepage as described below.

Or search for the word policies and check the values for the number 1. The number 1 USUALLY indicates a restriction is in effect. Post back with your findings.

To prevent further problems,

Correct your home page to the one you prefer, then immediately do the following:

Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet ExplorerRight-click on the Internet Explorer key, choose new>Key, name it Control Panel. Right-click on the Control Panel, chose new>DWORD value, name it Homepage. Right-click on Homepage, choose modify and type in the number 1.

This should lock your home page, so no other web site can change it.

Then navigate here and verify the homepage is correct:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
look for the Start Page entry.

NoFolderOptions was not there.
A search for the word policies (keywords in the error message?) came up empty.

I get the same error message but i get it when i goto the Folder Options in Windows Explorer. Also Win98se. I'm wondering how i could solve this. I've tried a search for NoFolderOptions and everything, but no luck....

Are you getting the mnessage at the same spot?

Do a search in the registry for Policies, specifying Keys Only under look in. Omit the PowerCfg enties. post back with what's listed.

I get the message when I try to use a hyperlink that is an an email in Outlook or Word. Incidentally it only started after I loaded Office XP - apologies for failing to mention that the first time.

Under Policies I found:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Default - REG_SZ (value not set)
CDRAutorun - REG_DWORD 0x0000000(0)
NoDriveTypeAutoRun - REG_DWORD 0x0000095(149)

You'll need to keep clicking the F3 key to find all occurances of the policies keys.

You should, for example, also have one here:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies

Nothing indicates any problems with the one you posted.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies I found
Default REG_SZ (value not set)

Found same under following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\SystemCertificates\trust

Only thing that varied was
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel
ConnWiz Admin Lock REG_DWORD 0x00000000(0)

SYMPTOMS

CAUSE
After you upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, the following registry key is either missing or corrupt:

HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Classes\htmlfile\shell\open\command

RESOLUTION
You may be able to resolve the issue by resetting Web settings in Internet Explorer. If that does not resolve the issue, import the registry key from another computer.

Reset Web Settings
Start Internet Explorer.

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Click the Programs tab, and then click the Reset Web Settings button.

Under Internet programs, verify that the correct e-mail program is selected.

Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box.

Click Apply, and then click OK.

NOTE: You may receive the following message when Internet Explorer starts:

Export and Import the Registry Key from Another Computer

Export the Registry Key from Another Computer
Click Start, and then click Run.

Click the command folder.

On the File or Registry menu (depending on your operating system), click Export.


Note the location of where the file will be saved. The registry file can be saved directly to the hard drive or floppy disk.

Type a unique file name, and then click Save.

Import the Registry Key
Copy the Exported registry key to the desktop on the problem computer.

Double-click the .reg file.

You receive the following message:
