bad or missing c:\dos\himem.sys. this is all i get and it will not let me reinstall windows 98 because it has errors or is missing lines 1 through 17 in config.sys files. how do i clear the hard drive and reinstall windows 98 ?? is it even possible ?

If there is nothing on the hard drive that you want to keep, you will need a 98 boot (starup) disk (either make one in win98 or download from Boot up with CDrom support and you will see your C: drive, a D: drive (ramdisk) and the CD will move down to E:
from your floppy you will be able to run FDisk (to delete the partition and remake it) and then format the drive. Then you will be able to run setup from your CD.

IMPORTANT:
If this is an 98 upgrade CD, then you will need either the original Win 3.1 or Win95 disks to verify to 98 that you can upgrade.

And while you have the system working with the 98EBD delete the autoexec.bat and config.sys on the hard drive.

You have a system that was originally DOS based and the config and autoexec were carried forward from that. Neither are needed in most 98 installations.
