Wondering if anyone can help me solve my current arcserve /exchange problem. I've supplied logs below. I was having problems with all mailboxes on brick level, however, since SP4 i only have 2 brick level mail box problems. I believe these problems are simply the mail boxes are completely empty, and never been logged into by an outlook client.

The 2 errors i'm more concerned about, arethe E8604 Failed to start backup/(331) "Insufficient privilege. I'm suspected these are when arcserve is trying to backup Information store and Site replication Service. Not sure how it can be insufficient privilege when it backs up over 100 mailboxes at brick level fine. Hopefully, someone can enlighten me and help me know what the problem is, or what i'm doing wrong.

Thanks

HI,

The backup job is skipping both the storage groups.

The account you are using for the job security does not have enough rights...

or..

If this is a remote backup use domainname\username for the security.

for the mailbox backup...
check if these two mailboxes have any users associated with them...

if not you will get this error.. you will have to manually deselect these two mailboxes from the backup job

cheers

The 331 error is occuring due to the fact that the account you are using for the backup does not have permissions to back up the exchange database level. This security is entered at the machine level of security.

I'm giving your option 2 a try Specialist. Will try it with our overnight backup, and let you know how i get on tomorrow. Can't see it not having enough rights, as it does 99% of the brick level backups fine, which is where the rights are needed more i think.

Have tried both storage groups on their own, and they back on fine without errors.

Am i correct in assuming that i shouldn't be backing up info storage if i'm doing a brick level backup? This is on a overnight data backup btw, not the full server backups which we do monthly. Unsure of recommendatinos for backing up/restoring of exchange via arcserve, so any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks for your replys/help.

You can backup the storage groups and the brick level in the same job.

when you say the sotrage groups backup fin on their own...
what security are you using then???

when you submit your daily jobs, check if the security information is correct.

use domainname\username...

cheers

Brick level backups in no way replace the database level backups. You would need to perform a restore of every mailbox (after creating on your own). Microsoft is not a fan of the brick level either. They do not provide a way of doing it from witin NT backkup. MS only supports database backups natively.

Right, can finally get back to you. Had no end of SCSI port errors etc preventing me from doing backups and various other problems.

I do believe specifying the domain in the security info has fixed my problems with backing up information stores etc, however, it appears i now have another problem whenever a backup of Exchange Server takes places. Basically, it hangs right near the end when trying to backup

c:\program files\arcserve\temp\c4a.cat

Once it gets to this file, you can't even stop it, and have to restart server in order to get it abort backup and report a crash. That required a patch mind, else if always said job was active even after you restarted pc, when the job was definately not active.

Anyone got any suggestions on how to solve this hanging on backing up of .cat file problem. Any ideas to resolve this problem are appreciated.

Hi,

This sounds like a database corruption.
you might wanna run a few DB checks...

You might find relevant DOCS on the CA support site..
still better initialize your ARCServe DB.
