E6300 is usually an indication of a hardware problem with the adapter. Are you running SCSI or Fibre? In either case, 99% of the time the answer is a hardware device problem. And it should not matter whether you back up SQL or something else.

Angelo-
sorry - I meant hardware environment:
SCSI or Fibre
adapter, (bridge/switch if fibre)
library name and model
drive name and model
how is it hooked up - anything special -i.e. how many drives per bus?
cheers
TP
I had this problem yesterday, with this message occuring every second. To resolve the problem I believe the problem was the SCSI bus. What I did was to set the speed down to the maximum speed of what the tape drive can talk.
i.e. If you are running a tape drive that can talk at 40 MB/s, set the ID of which the tape drive is running, to 40 MB/s. This is quite easy on the card which I was using (Adaptec 29160), but maybe not so easy on other cards that maybe out there.
You may also want to look at disable the device in windows device manager as well, to ensure that this is not causing any headached with the software, as ARCServe talks directly to the device and not through windows.
Hi
1-put the tape engine in debug from from server admin
search for error and paste in the thread
2-Is this error appears during the backup & restore
3-what chnages you have done on the machine before this errors
happen.
4-If you don't have any events in event viewier regards the
hardware error then this is related to arcserve not to hardware.
apply the tape Engine update
I tested the device with NtBackup --> no problem
I tested the device with HP LT&T tool --> no problem
I make a firware upgrade of the device --> crash during process
The device has been replaced with a recent firmware --> it works now!!
However it works I do not understand what's appening on the server. Absolutly NOTHING has change before the problem appears and I did no receive any error on eventvwr...
I apply the Tape Engine Update (was in scope...) after the problem appears...
Of course, the error appears during a backup.
I see anything else than an hardware error but why on AS and not with other tools?
