I have been receiving this error for quite a while and was hoping it would go away after we moved from Arcserve 2000 to Arcserve 9 and rebuilt our Backup Serves. Unfortunately I'm still getting this error with brand new rebuilt servers and even on a new tape library unit. Both servers are Compaq DL380's running Windows 2000 SP3. One server is running 2 TL891 tape librarys and the other is running a new MSL5026 tape library. Any ideas?

What did you do with the Windows 2000 drivers ( they should be uninsstalled and disabled in the W2K Device manager )
What tape drives are in the Compaq libraries : DLT or SDLT.
Did you check the firmware revisions with CA's certified device lists ??

regards

The windows drivers are not installed and have been disabled on both servers.

Each TL891 Library has 2 DLT 35/70's and the MSL5026 has 2 SDLT 160/320's.

I checked the certified list for both tape librarys and the MSL5026 firmware revision I'm running (4.08) appears to not be certified (CA says 4.04) and the TL891 firmware revision was way off. CA lists 2.31 and I'm runing 5.25. That can't be right can it? They can't be that far behind on revision levels can they?? Somebody tell me I'm reading this wrong.

Thanks for the info Cyklops. Any other ideas?

As a rule of thumb, all newer releases of firmware on devices are certified unless otherwise stated so you shouldnt have a problem there.

However, if your getting this error with a new install of the server, then i'd first be inclined to look at the scsi controller driver (if the TL is local), or HBA driver (if using a SAN).

Could be an indication your tape drive needs replacing. Tape drives or backup software will tend to give alerts like this when the heads get a bit of wear. Try running a cleaning tape through it several times. If this still gives the same alert, I would look at scheduling a replacement tapedrive. :)

Oh. And remember to reformat the tapes too!! :)

Thanks for the ideas guys. I checked the SCSI drivers (all 3 tape librarys are local, no SAN stuff yet) and they all appear to be up to date according to Compaq's website.

I might try giving CA a call and see if they have any ideas. Does anybody else out there receive these error messages and if you do how often do you get them?

I have been getting this error for the past 3 days, with 3 tapes. Nothing has been updated or changed on the server or with Arcserve 2000. It's been working fine for months.

Are the tapes old? Maybe the are due to change. Try swaping the bad ones for new ones. Don't forget to clean your drive(s) every so often too.

upon upgrading to ArcServe V9 - i started to recieve the unable to mount media error coupled with numerous other errors - the call to Arcserve really wasn't worth my hour of time cause they had no idea what was wrong - anyone have any luck with getting them to go away?

Running W2k SP3 - ArcServe V9 with 9.01 upgrade
