Hi, wondering if anyone could help. I have recently downloaded some avi files from the internet, but some work and some don't. The ones which don't only play the sound and at the start a request for a codec from a server runs and then fails. Does anyone know what this problem is or how I may sort it.
Cheers

First of all, make sure you have the latest DIVX codecs installed. Go to and install the free divx codec pack (it's up to you whether you want to install the bundled player). Try your AVI files again with Windows Media Player.

If that doesn't work:
Right-click the AVI file, select properties and it should tell you the codec that you need on the summary tab. A lot of AVI files nowadays are using the XVid codec. Whichever one you see on that summary tab, do a google search for its name and find a reliable site to download and install it from.

Avoid installing any bundled codec packs that you might come across on the internet. Many contain viruses or trojans to make your life miserable. Also, they may install an older version of a codec on top of a newer one without prompting you first.

Robofactory is correct, G-Spot will tell you what you need.
