Hi,

This is a really strange problem. I'm trying to defragment my drive, I get this error:

"Error Defragmenting Drive C"
"Your computer does not have enough free memory to defragment this drive. Quit one or more programs"

I've quite all other programs but still get the error.

My Spec:

Windows 98
AMD Athlon 1333mhz
256 RAM
ABIT KT7A RAID array
2 IBM DeskStar 40GB Drives.

I've got 36% of all system resources free.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Thanks,

Have you tried running the defrag in safe mode? And you've cleared out the task list until it's empty but for Explorer and the SysTray? Jennifer Sigman

36% free is horrible, no offense. Hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to see a list of tasks running in the background. "End-Task" on every one of them except Explorer. It may take a while and some of them are like Zombies - you have to zap them a few times!

Once you get down to Explorer, check your resources. You'll want to be above 60% to defrag. If that still doesn't work, reboot into safe mode (hit F8 during startup to get the boot menu and choice for Safe Mode).

I would hit ctrl-alt-delete as in the previous reply, if no luck go to safe mode and run scandisk after thattry defrag it should work in safe mode.
Some times if you are useing cable your provider will check to see if your alive, causing a interrupt in your defrag, also I have found that sometimes that McAfee would cause the defrag not to run right, But that was in some older versions and they have a patch now.

You may have to many TSR's (terminate and stay resident) programs running that are eating up all your memory.

Start
Run
type in msconfig
pick the startup tab and uncheck un-neccessary programs.

make note of what you uncheck.
re boot
run Defrag in windows after stopping any virus dection programs, office shortcut bar etc.

or as suggested above run defrag in safe mode.

256 RAM running a 98 system should NEVER have a sysmem problem.

What is the configuration of your RAM? Say 2 - 128M sticks, or 1 - 256M and if it is two ... are they of different brands?

Go to Start > programs > accessories > system tools > and run the maintenance wizard (after disableing your virus scan)

If it does it again, go to Search > for files and folders > then at 'advanced' section chose to search for files with a size greater than 200M on your entire C: drive and see if you have been zapped by a bug or saved some ungodly huge video/wav file.

Please post what happens or that you have already solved this so I can remove the email status!

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies, it appears that because I used a 3rd party device to partition my drives, win 98 will show this error.

thanks to wilco44 who had the same problem and directed me to the windows fact sheet.

Now I've got to reformat the whole thing again, as the product support for 'partition manager' don't think it's their problem.

Cheers
