I am trying to connect to a corporate VPN from my home. My OS is WinXP PRO. I am using a 3com cable modem connected via USB (I also tried it using TCP/IP to the cable modem). I have entered the correct IP address for the host, and have triple checked the connection parameters given to me by the IT folks at work. Other people are using Win2K clients without problems.

I can ping the server without any problem. But every time I attempt to connect, I get the following error:

-----------------------------------------
"651

Your modem (or other device) reported an error.
If this is a dial-up connection and you are using a supported external modem, turn off and then restart the modem. Close and restart Network Connections, and then redial. If your modem is not supported by Network Connections, switch to a supported modem. Make sure you correctly configured your modem for remote access. To check your configuration, see To configure a connection.

If this is a virtual private network (VPN) connection, you may have specified an incorrect TCP/IP address in the connection configuration, or the server that you are trying to reach may not be available. To determine if the server is available, contact your system administrator."

Any ideas?

Thanks.

mmm who is your cable modem provider??

NTL block the ports needed to setup a vpn across it.
The only way to setup a vpn with ntl is either ISDN or Leased line option. They also have a transparent web proxy.

This might be an option... what does the log say for your vpn client?

I am in Southern California and use Roadrunner as my ISP. I spoke with their tech rep; he said my modem (a 3COM) doesn't block any port, and that the VPN should work.
The IT guy monitored a session from his end and said that the tunnel was formed but immediately collapsed.
BTW, what does "ntl" mean?

Hello All-
Just posting a follow up. Turns out the IT folks had to upgrade their VPN server software to be XP compatable. After that, everything worked great.
