I am running NT Server with 2 external modems. Sometimes when logging in using dial up networking, we get error 629 message and sometimes when someone's connected, it will just disconnects. I reinstalled SP5 but that didn't help ( saw an article on Microsoft site ). User name and password is correct. I don't know what else it could be and I can't find anymore info on the net. I just installed the second modem on COM1 and that's when it started happening.

I looked up error 629 on the MS Knowledge base. . .there is an article you might be able to use. The listed cause is

"The Routing and Remote Access Service has not been configured to receive calls as a RAS server"

When you installed the second modem, one of the problems listed on this article could have been created. Check it out. If that does not help, let me know. I can do a little more research.

I saw the same article and made sure it's been configured to receive calls and even reapplied SP5 but it didn't seem to work.

Does it only happen on one modem or is it both of them? Are the modems the same brand and model? Have you verified all the com ports are disabled in the bios and the bios is set to "non-pnp os"? If the modems are different types it may be a driver issue. I'd try updating drivers to the newest possible. Then if that does not help, I'd replace the newest modem with one as similar to the old one as possible. Also, in my experience the vast majority of pci winmodems are very bad news in NT.

In the immortal words of Number 5. . ."mooooore input!"

Check Microsofts support knowledge base. Error 629 seems to be a security encryption problem. I did some work for a place that was having this problem and I applied a Microsoft patch. They no longer have the problem. I found the patch by searching "Error 629"
