Hi Guys,

I am having an issue with restoring data from arcserve to its original location.

basically i have setup a daily backup scheme to a dell ultrium tape machine and i am currently testing restoring various data to make sure my backups are going to work in the event of disaster. my plan is to begin with a small, simple restore and work my way up to a larger - more reality based major disaster restore.

I was previously running daily incrementals with a weekly full and a monthly archive for storage. but after not having much luck restoring data from the incremental tapes, i decided to simplify and run only full backups each day.

unfortunately i am still unable to backup and i get the error i used as the subject

Error 3150

Unable to connect to network drive

Module:

Tasks Engines

Reason:

The drive is not available due to invalid user name or password or to Network error.

Action:

Reconnect to the drive and resubmit the job.

I have searched google and these forums but no dice. so heres a rundown of my problem, hopefully its something simple.

I used the "restore by tree" option and selected a small unimportant file to test on. for the sake i simplicity, i select to restore it to its original location and i move the original file so i can easily see if it has been replaced.

i select the default backup version which was taken last night and should reside on the current tape in the drive.

i then submit the job and am not asked to enter a password.

the job eventually fails and throws the error 3150 message as seen above.

i dont understand why its complaining about authentication. i assume it uses the same password i have entered to run the backups, which works fine.

this has me baffled, any ideas... anyone?

Thanks for all advice.

Hi,
You're actually saying that you have two problems here.
1. You can not backup from the network drive:
"unfortunately i am still unable to backup and i get the error i used as the subject"
2. You can not restore:
"the job eventually fails and throws the error 3150 message as seen above"

What is actually your problem here? Backup or Restore or both?

I hope you find this post helpful.

GSC

When you restore, check the security to the server you are restoring to on the destination tab and make sure it is using the correct id/password. Right click and select security.

Hi GSC,

Sorry for the confusion, that was a typo, i actually meant to type - "unfortunately i am still unable to restore and i get the error i used as the subject"

just to clarify - restoring is the only problem, backups seem to authenticate and process fine with no errors, i tried to edit my OP bu i cant find and edit button.

Hi,

I am actually restoring to the original location so i cannot right click on the server. i am able to authenticate to select the directory location if i select a different server but the process still ends in the same error.

Hi,
Try to restore by session and see if that works.

I hope you find this post helpful.

check the activity log to make sure it is connecting to the client agent.

It is also a good idea to make sure ARCserve is up to date.

Don't you have a connection to the server you want to restore to using different credential than the one you're using to restore ?

E.g:
you're logged on as USER on ARCSERVER, then you have a drive mapped to RESTORESRV (so mapped as USER).

Then from arcserve on ARCSERVER you trying to restore to RESTORESRV as RESTOREUSER.

This will fail as you have two different set of credentials to connect to the same remote machine from a single source.

Hi Chris,

thats an interesting point but im pretty sure i am using the same authentication for all servers which is my domain admin username/password.

If i were to use different username/passwords as you suggested, how would i go about this?

well, i'd connect (locally or throuh remote desktop) to RESTORESRV and run "NET SESSIONS"
This will tell you if they are connection open from ARCSERVER.

If tey ren't any, my guess is wrog. IF they are some, then you'll need to check why are these connections open
