Hi Hockeynowgirl
This may or may not help with your library problem, I only have QuarkXpress 6.5 and not passport so I haven't had that problem
I am running OS 10.3.8 on an IMac 400 with Quark 6.5, this solution may or may not be the same for PC's.
First without Quark open look in Quark 6.1 folder and see if there is a folder there named Preferences, if there is no folder there then create one and then launch Quark.
The original installation with 6.1 did not install that folder.
Another thing I noticed was that with a text or picture box I only had the dashes and stripes available for frames, the frames that I had with Quark 4.1 were all missing. I could not under stand why Quark would discontinue those frames.
So if you are on a Mac with Quark 6.5 or 6.1, draw a text box and choose a frame, and if Yearbook, Certificate Deco Shadow are missing then this may be what you need to do.
Quit Quark then go to Applications folder then find your QuarkXpress folder. Inside the QuarkXPress folder there is a folder named For System, open that folder up and inside is an item called QuarkXPress Components double click on that icon and then choose your Quark folder for the installation and that will install the missing borders the initial installation did not install plus a lot of other components. This will install those missing frames and also seems to help with the highlighted text hanging up.
You will then be able to use these borders, Yearbook, Certificate, Coupon, Deco Shadow, Deco Plain, Maze, Ornate, Op Art1 and Op Art2.
Hope this helps.

i'm on a new imac (the kind with just the flat monitor with the computery bits inside it and have quark 6.1 (6.5)

there was no prefrences folder so i made one... i have the borders.. but i still can't open the library??? i'm lost as to what to try next

Create and save the library file, with whatever name you want.
Then go to the folder where you saved the library file, highlight the icon, then choose get info, under file menu and when the window opens look under Open With, there you can select which program to open the file with, make sure it is Quark 6.1 or 6.5 which ever you are running.
Don't know if that will help or not but doesn't cost anything to try.
Other than that do a google search for QuarkXPress error 287.
Good Luck
