Error 1328 since updating Windows Installer

Since updating Windows Installer (for Win95/98/ME) to 2.0 (dated 25 April 2002) from Microsoft Office Product Updates (for Office 2000, running on Windows 98), I get an error whenever I try to repair or reinstall the Office installation. "Error 1328. Error applying patch to file C:\Config.msi\PT7295.tmp. It has probably been updated by other means, and can no longer be modified by this patch. For more information contact your patch vendor." On a different PC, after the same update, I get the same msg but referring to PT3222.tmp. The only tips I have found for this error so far relate to Administrative Installation, or to Windows XP. It appears to have been a bad move to follow the advice "Microsoft strongly recommends" this update! (& of course it is non-reversible).
Any clues? Any help appreciated.
Cheers,
Alistair

Well, still don't know the reason, but at least I've found a solution for myself - I did a complete Uninstall, then installed again from scratch. Office will now happily Repair or Reinstall, & Office Update confirms that Windows Installer is now 2.0 (although the other "security updates" were lost & had to be redownloaded). I've since reproduced the same scenario (problem & solution) on other PCs - seems odd that noone else appears to have come across this?
Cheers,
Alistair

Check out this Microsoft article, just in case you come across it again.
Go to select Office Suite in the search drop down list and type in Q259554 in the Solutions containing field then click Search Now.
Article Q259554 will explain what happened and how to resolve the issue. what would i do with a brain if i had one?

Thanks for the tip - unfortunately, it doesn't help, as Q259554 applies to "You applied the SR-1 Administrator Update to your administrative installation." I was simply performing a Repair/Reinstall of an existing standard installation. The only non-standard factor might be that our CDROM is a corporate "Microsoft Licensing" edition (Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Service Release 1, January 2001), not an off-the-shelf retail edition.
Cheers,
Alistair

PS: I find "Google" more effective for searching than Microsoft's own "Search Now" (Google searches the whole web quicker than Microsoft searches its own KnowledgeBase). [thumbsup2]

Actually the problem is that the version you are trying to install, whether you know it or not, is a beta or unreleased version. Neither of these versions can be upgraded to SP-1. The only advice Microsoft gives you is that you need to go out and buy a copy off the shelf with a "Microsoft Hologram". It screwed me too. Hey don't believe me? Check this out:

Anyone found a way to install the "service packs" yet?

Please don't tell me to buy a MS certified one - I know.
