I have a iMac v.10.3.9 After the computer has been idle for a few hours, any programs that are not running already cannot be started. The error pops up:

<b>"The application cannot be launched. -10810"</b>

I have to reboot the computer to use programs. After reboot it's fine until the next time. Has anyone seen this problem before? I am not familiar with troubleshooting Mac problems since I've never had a problem before.

I'd take a look at /var/log/system.log and see if there are error messages there. Also check /Library/Logs/CrashReporter and ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter.

I remember having problems like this early in 10.x development, but not since 10.2. Back then the problem was something was hanging the Finder or the Dock.

I can view the logs but I don't know what to look for. The operating system continues to work when it happens. I just can't launch any new programs.

The only maybe relevant thing I saw was in system.log. I'm not sure what VShield is. This matches the time that I tried to open Firefox, it gave that error and then I rebooted:

Sep 15 21:59:53 localhost loginwindow[184]: sendQuitEventToApp (VShieldBkgd): AESendWithMach returned error -1712
Sep 15 21:59:53 localhost loginwindow[184]: sendQuitEventToApp (VShieldMount): AESendWithMach returned error -1712
Sep 15 21:59:54 localhost loginwindow[184]: sendQuitEventToApp (VShield): AESendWithMach returned error -1712
Sep 15 21:59:54 localhost loginwindow[184]: sendQuitEventToApp (VShieldUpdate): AESendWithMach returned error -1712

vshield is that half baked .Mac virus checker.

I would try uninstalling it if I were you.

Any idea how to uninstall the Virex VShield. I'll bet that is what's causing the problems. It never works anyway.

thanks.

Sorry; I installed it once, years ago, and removed it 30 minutes later.

Worst case: get your OS disks out and do an archive-and-install.
