error 1058, could not start the smtp service

From sevices, the service is disabled and cannot start.
been to check to make sure that this serice is enabled and it is.
why is it coming up with this error ?

What account does the service start under ?

If it's not a system account service have you changed the password on the account it's trying to use ?

thanks for the help, but i have made sure the service is enabled and is set for automatic but still it gives me this error.
As regards to accounts well it won't start on any user accounts, and no password has been set.
