well i got the error 0x0000008e (0xC0000005, 0X805937DD, 0XF4665B68) and i can't start XP at all. It says i have a hardware problem/failure, so i went into WIN98 (dual boot) and checked device manager, run scandisk, etc, and found no probs, so i am at a loss for what is wrong, and i don't know how to fix it (apart from re-installing winXP)
If it helps, yesterday i did a winXP install under the repair option, so i can't see it being a corruption prob. Also i downloaded all the updates (critical + reccomended) and it would not boot after that

I hope you didn't update any driver updates for any hardware on your system. I ran those updates on 3 different machines and all of them never booted again. I had to reinstall XP then went to the hardware manufacturer to get the lastest updates. I have not had any problems with any of those machines since (all three are dual boot with 98 as well).

How much RAM have you got?

"STOP 0x0000008e" Error Message During Windows XP Setup (Q315335)

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if one of the following conditions is true:

One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed on your computer are faulty.

The RAM configuration is incompatible with Windows XP.

These links might help too. One talks about a boot sector virus.

well i have been running XP for 6 months now and have had no probs, I re-installed XP and it works fine now, but thanx anyway

oh and btw - stupid me forgot to tell you all that i reseated my ram + tried one of the modules on it's own (1 X 128 meg + 1 X 512 meg) and it didn't affect if a bit

I have the same problem with the 8E message, and have reinstalled XP several times... I get the error about 5, maybe 10 times a DAY. Any ideas? Ive got 512 ram, brand new, so its not that... Could be my SB Audigy card, but i had the error before that. Anything helps. Thanks.

Did you have the problem before installing the brand new RAM?
