err-disabled in Iraq

I have been with the same unit for about 2 years now and i'm finally getting some respect. I have moved up to the NetOps section and a new problem has us stumped. If i can be the guy to fix the problem it would help them understand for puting their trust into me. so here is my problem.

We have 2 switches with a fiber connection about 3 hours ago we were informed about a degraded service on the switch in a building across the road. the fiber line is buried. This line supplies VOIP and many other server services. The degradation has been going on for around a week and we are just now being told about it. it seemed to have gotten worse the more we inspected. I first found that the interface on my side was having alot of input errors. So i reset the counters and watched. Here are the results after and hour.

59906 input errors, 1182 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored

The problem has come to a hault when the line went down and is now

GigabitEthernet0/1 is down, line protocol is down (err-disabled)

both sides are configured the same.

I am stumped. I looked up any possibilites i could and can't find anything. any help you might have or any suggestions as to how i could give more information to find a solution.

Hello
The problem could be degrade in the fiber link or damage to the fiber.But first consider changing the GBIC modules.The switch experience too many errors and it has shut down the port.The get the port back up do the "shut" and then "no shut" command.
If you have a log server try to run through the logs to trace the events.

I agree with Minue, but what have you done to test the fiber? Is there a spare pair? You may also want to change you gbic port all together for testing of course....

Look in the logs it will usually tell you why it err-disabled the port also . Look at both ends , if you only see errors on one end then half your fiber path is faulty and its either the fiber, connectors or gbics .

Dust gets into everything there.
Take some isopropyl alcohol and clean the ends of the fiber patch cords on both ends with dust free towels.
I know this sounds too simple, but it is a step many people forget. In your environment, this should be the first thing to try.

Thank you all for your quick response. The problem was fixed about 5 minutes after i submitted this post. All we did to fix it was re-seat both cable ends then did a shut/no shut on the port and it came back in. I monitored the port for 30 minutes after that and we are not having any errors. What confuses me is why we were having errors on one side, but not the other.

I'd be a little cautious if that is your end fix. You still might want to clean the ends of the fiber and keep an eye on the interfaces just to make certain it doesn't come back.

Probably just a loose connection or dirt it happens....

On a fiber link it can happen in one direction because the transmit and receive are two different fiber optic cables.
