I have a Epson FX-850 dot Matrix printer I am trying to set up to print single labels. The problem is that once the label prints the page advances to the next tear off position instead of the next label. There is a dip switch setting (1-5) to turn this off but it does not seem to make a difference whether the switch is turned on or off it still advances the paper to the next page tear off position no matter what I set it at. I am using Windows XP.

The software is telling it you are done printing and ejecting the page. This is a software issue as far as I can tell.

I remember having a similar problem a few years ago when we moved from a character based system to Windows NT.

Obviously, the solution may depend on what application you are using to print the labels.

I think what you'll have to do is go into 'Printers and Faxes', and then from the 'File' menu select 'Server Properties'. Here you will find a list of all the available forms for your printers. You can create a new form with the dimensions of your label. The page length should then be picked up from what you have specified as the height of the form - I think!

I should have added that you will have to select the form under the printer settings, so that it will use it.

I can't find out where to select the form is it under printer properties or Printing preferences or somewhere else?????

When you select your page size under Printing Preferences (A4, Letter etc...), those are the forms.

If you have created it correctly, you should see it at the bottom of the drop down list.

I have created it but it in not appearing in that list...in fact there is a whole list of forms that do not show up in my list.

I installed the driver myself and tried it before I wrote the solution. The only thing I haven't done is print it out.

It should definitely be there if you have created it correctly, and saved the form.

All I can suggest is you try again.

Under printer Server properties there is a list of about 40 different forms including the one I created but when I go to the printer properties to select "paper/output" there are only 6 different options letter, A4,A5,Legal etc.

I've just tried again on another PC. I create the form, save it, and go into printing preferences. I go to 'Paper/Quality' tab, click on 'Advanced' button and go to the drop down box for 'Paper Size', where I see the form I created.

I can also go straight into properties, and select the 'Device Settings' tab, click on 'Tractor Feed', and in the drop down box I can select my form.

I've installed the default driver for the FX-850 supplied with XP, so I don't understand why you can't do it.

I just tried reinstalling the printer and that did not resolve the issue either I have the printer set as a shared printer could that be the reason why?

To be honest I don't really know. All I can say is that it has worked on both computers that I have tried it on.

Have you tried to decrease your custom page size?
I had the same problem and decreasing the page width from 21cm to 20cm did the job.
