Enterprise versus Standard Edition

Hi,
I have build a new Exchange server for our domain, currently we have one Exchange Server 2003 Standard edition on a small network with about 100 users..the plan was to build a second Exchange box to split up the single Storage group

I installed Exchange 2003 Enterprise Edition on the new hardware but when I tried moving a few mailboxes over they stopped getting mail so I had to move them back, I have checked the new build and it looks fine but it cannot send or receive mail, is there an issue with mixing Standard and Enterprise Editions of Exchange server? or am I doing something wrong?

Why did you use Enterprise Edition? You WAY overpaid for features you're not going to use.

What do the event logs say?

Did you create the connector or was the connector created between the new box and the old box?

1) I work in the field of Education, Academic licencing is a
lot cheaper
2) I tried it first without setting up the SMTP connector and
it did not work, then I configured the connector using the
same settings as the original working server

That's not true. Based on his OP, he's not using clustering. And, he's adding the second server so he can have another storage group. For 100 users, he didn't mention database size as a factor.

So, unless there is an x.400 connector needed, Enterprise isn't needed.

fitfixer - there is no compatibility issue when using both versions. Typically, if both servers are in the same site, you should be good to go with connectivity between them. Is there anything in the event logs?

Maybe he is going to cluster. Do you know that? Just because he didn't mention database size doesn't mean it's not a factor in his decision to purchase Enterprise does it? Maybe it is, but since that's not the problem he's facing here, he didn't feel it necessary to burden his post with that information. Does he need an x.400 connector? Do you know? No...you don't. Neither do I. He could very well have saved a ton of money for his company/organization by purchasing the Enterprise now instead of later. Kudo's to him for being so far sighted.

Back to the issue at hand...

You'll need a routing group connector between the existing server and the new server to allow the email to flow to the boxes on the new server. Hard to diagram...but your email flows in from the Internet to your email server, just the one. If the mailbox isn't on that server, it has to have a way to know where to send it to (the new server) in order to deliver the mail.

As Pat said...check the event logs on the old server to get an idea of what the issue is. Do the inbound emails bounce back with an error? That would be helpful as well.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will check the event viewer and see if there is anything there
although there are only 100 users we plan to expand to double that, there are also about 25 Blackberry devices on a BES server, storage space and backup are becoming issues and I plan to break down the storage groups to make for easy backup and restore

I have checked the event viewer and there are no clues there,
these two servers are in the same room and there is only one routing group, a routing group connector requires at least two, should I set up a the new server on a second routing group and configure a new RG connector?

I have set up a test account and logged on with a test PC,
When the mailbox is moved over to the new Exchange server it stops sending and receiving, moving it back to the old server fixes the problem, other than that mail is flowing normally
