does anyone run any other window managers then cde actually on production systems ?

my boss used to run Openwindows ... but we've convinced him of the benefits of CDE ...

other than that ... not really.

Openwindows was the default before Solaris7. It was included with Solaris7 (for compatibility). We have some people still using Openwindows on Sol7. It is no longer included with Sol8. Sol 9 will change to gnome shortly so if you upgrade the OS the change will have to happen before too long anyway.

actually it is in solaris 8 ... it just warns you if you try to use it :)

have you seen gnome on solaris? i think it's awful personally ... :)

I guess you have to ask yourself what is your production system worht to you, and what do you need to do on it. Like most basic questions with regards to productions unix systems, you do not want to fully customize, barring unforseen security comprises and or problems enabling you to provide a quick recovery. That being said, CDE looks and feels great, Gnome could be better, but I have to consider teh risks.
