I have just upgraded my PC from Win98 to Win2K Pro since when I can only get a US Keyboard. This is a bit of a nuisance as I live in London and need a Pound sign and other UK characters.

The Input Language in Regional Settings is set to English (UK) but the Keyboard Layout is set to United States (International).

When I try to change the Keyboard layout to UK there is no option to change it. There are only three other options in the drop down box - Dvorak US, Dvorak LH US and Dvorak RH US.

Any ideas please?

peptone - In CtrlPanel/Reg Opts, check both General Tab and Input Locale tab - do you have the English option in either?

If not, you'll have to install it - can't remember the steps to add it post-install, I've been bitten too many times and ALWAYS remember to set it during install time, as it's a pain in the butt if you forget.

FYI, during install, there is an option to change the SYSTEM locale, this is the one that most people miss, which generally results in the Administrator having the locale you want (e.g. English) but any new users pick up the SYSTEM locale, which defaults to US.

If yo need more help, come back to me and I'll seee what I can do.

Thanks for your suggestion. Both of these options in Regional Settings are set to English (UK). I was careful to select them at Set Up, because Ive been bitten too in the past.

Did you definiteley set the SYSTEM locale as well? I must admit, I actually set the UK one, set it as default and REMOVE the US (sic) completely.

I guess you don't use the administrator account as a rule - what options do you have as admin, can you select your required UK settings in there?

May not help, but I had an occassion once where the only way I could revert to UK settings was to set something obscure (but that I could still use!) like French and then set it back to UK (after a cold restart). This was actually more of an application setting than the system, but may help you.

I'm sure that I did set the System Locale to UK and I am logged in as the Administrator. I have the rights to make the change but the option to do so just isn't there. I thought I might be able to add it in using Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup but don't think I can.

Told you it was a pain in the butt :)

Are you in a desparate hurry to get it fixed? I'll dig out the workaround for you (if nobody else comes up with it for you in the meantime), but it won't be until around Friday lunchtime BST.

That would be fantastic. I can wait til then. Thanks.

peptone,

Go to CP>Keyboard and take a look at Add under Input Locales. English (UK) should be just above English (US)

peptone :- sorry, been busy this morning with a server down problem, haven't managed to look into your problem further. I'll drop in on Monday - if you've not got a result by then, I'll sort it for you.

Hi BigJohnD and Mapleleaf

Thank you for your suggestions.

Re your picture above:

I see the UK Input Language in the left hand column but the Keyboard Layout/IME in the right hand column is set to US and I cannot change it. If I click the Properties box it only brings up four alternatives, all of which are US, eg US Dvorak.

peptone,

I was just able to get mine like yours!!. Bear in mind, I'm in Canada, but use US settings.

I reset it by going to RS>IL, adding another keyboard and then deleting the wrong one.

There appears to be a bug (what's new) in the RS>IL input box.

Hope this helps,

Ian

One thought - how much trouble to backup and do a clean install of 2k? Upgrades from 98 are notoriously less stable than clean installs (so better for future use) & you should solve keyboard problem.

Hi Mapleleaf

Can you please explain what you mean by RS>IL, you've lost me.

Hi Wolluf

It would take ages to reinstall all my Software. I'm trying to avoid it and the keyboard is the only problem that I have left after doing the upgrade.

Hi, peptone,

It seems like something's missing from your set up.

I'd go with wolluf's suggestion - a fresh re-install. If you have all your data and personalised settings backed up and all the drivers and setup disks to hand, it shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

Regional Settings - > Input Locales?
