Endnote numbering in imported Word files

I am importing MSWord files that have endnotes into Indesign. When I do, Indesign renumbers the endnotes with letters (so instead of a superscript "1" the first note its superscript "a").

How do I change this?

Note that I use import options, and remove the original formatting of the Word document (to remove double line spacing and other such formats.

Thanks

Dan

You might do better by keeping the Word formatting and making a paragraph style that meets your layout needs. Bullets and numbering are the last item in the paragraph sytle menu. Whne you remove Word formatting, paragraph styles, like endnotes, are not imported..

If you just want to change the letter to numbers, you can create a style and apply it to just the endnotes or select the endnotes and change to numbers via the paragraph window.

One problem that you constantly runinto when importing Word docs is that you don't know how the original author did things.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

Thank you for the suggestions. I imported w/o removing the Word formatting, but it stayed the same (letters replaced numbers). I am not sure how to create a style that would change the letters to numbers in the actual body of the text. I can see how you'd change the style in the endnotes--turn it into a bulleted list, right? Currently, I'm just changing the letters to numbers manually... not the ideal situation, but I am stumped!

What version of InDesign? In CS2, you have a lot more control over footnotes and endnotes...though it's still not perfect. Try this setting: Type > Document Footnote Options: Numbering and Formatting and selecting the Style as 1,2,3, etc.

Thank you for your suggestion. I am using CS2, but when I do that with the footnotes, it doesn't change the endnotes, unfortunately.

What I'm doing right now (a little tedious, but it works) is make all of the endnotes into a bulleted list (numbered bullets) and then delete the letters in the notes. Then I go through the document and change the superscript note letters to numbers. I've learned quickly how to convert letter combos like "bf" to numbers. some kind of automated process would be preferable, obviously.

Cheers, Dan

Have you tried a Google search for a plug-in that might do the trick? Or a script? Good luck!
