hi folks,

i have a computer provided by my employer, installed with windows 7 and office 2010 (all clean installs from a reimage exercise just a month ago). recently (after a particular set of windows updates), i have started facing this issue in editing files on livelink.

when i log into LL through IE 9 (64-bit), and navigate to the Edit link of any file, here is the message that i get:

Message from webpage
In order to perform this operation, you need to configure your browser to allow scripting ActiveX controls, and you need to install the Microsoft Sharepoint Services Client API. The Sharepoint client API is an optional component of Microsoft Office XP and Microsoft Office 2003.

needless to say that after that message, i am unable to edit the file, and the page refreshes to where it was before as if to mock me.

also, when the problem originally started (one weekend all of a sudden), i looked at the updates installed and removed the one related to IE9 and voila! it started working again. then, recently a whole lot of updates were pushed (by microsoft as well as my sys admins) and the issue came back. now, there are so many updates dated on a particular day that i have no possible way of eliminating this issue by trial and error.

in case this helps any - since i live in LL all the time, i decided it was time to try some other browser. chrome did not work (LL did not jive with it) so i installed FF 29. when i tried to edit a file in it after logging in, FF showed a message asking for this file to be installed - otnpdavedit101.xpi. once i did that, things are working swimmingly well in FF.

i ask for some assistance in fixing the issue in IE 9, else the IT folks here are just going to reimage my computer for no reason (that is their method - use a bazooka to kill a fly).

thank you in advance for any help. please ask for information and i will provide it promptly.

what livelink version do you run
If it is like a new CS10 version then the Enterprise Connect and Officeeditor.ocx is a much better alternative to what you are running into which I think is webdav. From the error message what I am thinking it is saying is you need to run the "Microsoft Web Folders" service which is another name for webdav connectivity .Webdav has innumerable other problems so many companies settle for the officeditor activex or the fully blow EC interface.

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?

hi appnair,

thank you very much for responding. the one thing that helped me right away was your suggestion to try using Enterprise Connect, which is installed on my machine. i was able to navigate to the desired folders and open files in Edit mode. so that is a huge relief!

my organization seems to be on version 9.7.1.

i check the services that are running on my Win 7 64-bit laptop, and i did not find anything that said Web Folders. is that something i should install? if so, would you kindly indicate how? i am heard of webdav in relation to LiveLink in my organization; the sys admin had once told me that is how the files open in Edit mode.

if you can help me to open documents in Edit mode from within IE 9, i will be utterly chuffed. thanks in advance.

just one question about my puzzlement - how is it that this same setup was working for a little while, then it broke down, then resurrected, only to die again?

the underlying protocol is called webdav which means that the livelink's webserver also exposes livelink as a webdav application.Your computer acts as a client server arrangement.Typically if you also have sharepoint running there as well when you go to its interface f you see a "Explorer view" then it is this client that is showing the files in true windows fashion.MS promotes webdav tremendously but most network pundits abhor the idea. Some companies wont even install the livelink webdav module it is nothing but pain....

some links to help you if you need to actually use webdav for your work

keywords for searching is webdav, web folders etc etc
