We recently purchased a used Cisco 4506 Switch. I'm more familiar configuring Cisco switches using the GUI web interface but I have been unable to do so with this switch. Does it need to be enabled on the switch? How can I check?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

That switch would be painfull to manage via the web interface.... You'll need to learn the CLI for proper management.

It's really not that difficult, and there are a lot of exampels on this and other websites.

You don't indicate what supervisor the 4506 has . If this is IOS based then you have to make sure you have ip http server enabled . If this runs catos then you have to have a specific catos image to run the http interface and also have the http server enabled to be able to configure via web interface . If this 4506 is fully loaded it will take a lot of time to configure via the web interface .

I didn't think you could run catos on a 4500 series chassis.

Baddos is correct , I was thinking 4006 when talking about catos . 4506's are strictly IOS based with Sup II+ , IV, V .

Obviously it depends if you run IOS or CatOS. All my old 4506's have Sup 1's and 2's that run CatOS. You need to load a special CiscoView file into flash and reboot your switch.

So if your switch is CatOS and not IOS, here's what you do.

If you CatOS version is 8.4(5), then you would need the CV file that is 8.4(x). You must also run the "set ip http server enable". I've found it necessary most times to reboot the switch to fully enable the software. It's key to make sure your OS and CV files are in the same release train for all the features to work.

You will probably need a contract to download the updated binary files to do this.
