Enabling DMA on CDROM drives ...

I'm trying to rip CDs using Digital Audio Extraction ... ripping info in digital format straight from the CDROM. Problem is that although I have digital audio enabled for the CDROM through the device manage, I'm still only able to rip at about 0.9x realtime.

I am now incline to think that it has something to do with the fact that I don't seem to be able to enable DMA on the CDROM drive - when I check the box in the Device Manager properties window and restart it automatically un-checks.

So my question (at last!) - how do I enable DMA, and (to pre-empt the inevitable) how do I know if DMA is NOT supported, and what exactly it is that does not support it?

Thanks in anticipation.

Usually the make and model of mobo is printed right on the surface of the mobo, other times you will find small, thin, strips of paper pasted on the side of the pci slots. And, in very rare cases, on the bottom of the mobo.

I know that both CDROM and CD-R are working fine...

OK. The problem in your original post refers to the CDROM. What about the CD-RW drive? Does it have slow extraction rates too?

Typically you do not need to enable or modify DMA settings in the BIOS. This should be handled from within the OS. If you have an Intel chipset on your motherboard that is compatible with a P-III or faster CPU, then you should be able to download Intel's Application Accelerator utility that enables DMA for you.

This is looking interesting ... thanks cdogg and garebo. I'll try that later on.

Um, just to clear up some questions that were asked, yes the CD-R works fine too - it's ripping at 1.4x - still not great, but much better than 0.9x!

I'll let you know what happens when I install the Application Accelerator.

Cheers.

I tried installing the Intel Accelerator Application, but it said I don't have an Intel chipset. I know my processor is an Intel 333MHz Celeron, but I don't know anything about chipsets, I'm afraid. The IDE Bus Master Controller is an ALi M5229, and the mobo seems to be American Megatrend (connected with ALi?) ... once it starts getting this deep I'm lost.

So ... no! No progress, still at 1.4x rip speed.

American Megatrend is your bios, its AMI bios.

Look on the motherboard and give us the info you get from the motherboard. It should be printed right on the motherboard, but sometimes its on the side edge of the pci slots.
