Enabling Caller ID for SPD 1428 1

Just changed local phone service providers and have caller ID service for the first time. 11-year-old Vodavi phone/AVP system is all working as usual after the cut-over, and display phones still just show 'Transfer from station 108' as call is transferred from the attendant. Sales literature lists caller ID as an 'optional' feature.
1) How can I tell if I have the option?
2) If I do, is there something I need to do to enable it?
3) If I don't, can I get it at this point?

p.s. I hope the model number is correct - the invoice lists 1400-00 4x8 KSU and our station user guides are for SPD 1428/2856.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I know that you posted this back on June 30 and may not need the information now but since I have it, here ya go. The Vodavi 1428 has the caller ID capability but requires the correct SW version and an external box called "Caller ID Interface Unit" Part # SP1480-00. Each CO line connects in parallel from the network interface to the KSU and to the Caller ID box. The "Caller ID Interface Unit" has a DB9 (I think it's a DB9) that connects from the Caller ID box to the KSU. When a call rings in, the CID box receives the CID information and passes it to the KSU through the DB9 connection and on to the telephone where in appears on the display. This is a basic outline of what takes place but at least will give you an idea! I was able to Google search: (Vodavi SP1480-00) and found the product from secondary market sellers of Vodavi. Good Luck with your system!

Thanks trabra, I DO still need the info, and your explanation makes perfect sense. Looking at the original list of installed parts on the invoice, I don't see the SP1480-00 Caller ID Interface Unit, and physically looking at the phone system, I don't see an external box other than the ring generator. So it would appear that to get caller ID I'll need to purchase and install that part.

You mentioned correct software version - what version would that be, and how does one determine what version is in use?

Main question I guess would be: is this a do-it-yourself project for a non-phone-techie, or do I need to try and find a Vodavi service dealer?

When Vodavi designed your system Caller ID must have been an after thought and Vodavi had a third party build an external ID box instead of integrating it onto the system CO line card. I've had issues setting up Caller ID on the DHS system and haven't installed this on the SP1428 but feel confident in saying that you should save yourself alot of time and energy and find a Vodavi Tech to work with you. If you will post your City and State I work with a nationwide provider of telecommunications services and can find you a Vodavi guy. As far as the software level goes, you would need to have the manual and you can find it that way or pull the cover and read it off the chips inside the KSU as they have stickers on them that lists the SW level.

I am in Raleigh, North Carolina. A search for dealers on the Vodavi site came up with one in Winston-Salem, which is a couple of hours away. If you've got a line on someone a little closer, that would be great.

Thanks for the response and advice.

I have a line on a certified Vodavi tech out of Clayton, NC. Is that any closer to you? Let me know if that is less than 2 hours and I'll get you in touch with him.

Yes, Clayton is about 30 minutes out - definitely closer. Will appreciate his contact info. If you don't want to post it here, please email it to me directly at hware@horizonhealthware.com

Thanks!
