Good day,

We currently have two domains and I need to enable a reporting software into our external domain. This domain does not have Exchange on it and the reporting software is supposed to send emails out depending on the email account it finds associeated with the user.

Unfortunately, without exchange in AD this particular field is disabled.

How can I enable this in AD without installing Exchange onto the network?

Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

what a strange requirement.

Can you use the Exchange install to perform a domain prep to extend the schema for Exchange for that particular domain? Jsut throwing this out there...never had a domain without Exchange, needing the attributes of Exchange in the user accounts....

anyone else?

Thank you both for the information.

TechyMcSe2k, the reason for this is the AD domain is web server based ONLY, with development systems and requirements to utilize AD, however, new regulations with some processing we're doing requires us to cut of the domain from all others to be compliant. Besides, upper management has mandated that they wanted to utilize an external exchange service rather than bring one inhouse. Either way, this no longer affects the web/service domain which is where I need the fix.

I need to associate an email address with the user accounts in this domain for certian notifications and reports to be annouced automatically.

Unfortunately, this is an after-the-fact fix that needs to be handled short of placing an exchange server in that network.

Sorry for my long winded reply but there's no easy way to explain this.

What Exchange "setup /forestprep" extends the schema and modifies the users attributes to include a mailbox. In practical terms, this means that 4 new tabs will appear on the User's property sheet as viewed in Active Directory Users and Computers.

It may work to try and use this approach.I have never personally done it, but it may be fun to find out. Otherwise, I am at a loss for this one and hope another forum member can be more helpful.
