We have Sun Solaris 8 server and /etc/default directory is empty. This is a new install. I have no clue who installed the OS, but I'm almost positive that this directory should not be empty. I logged in as root and tried to view this directory and the contents is empty. Can someone please help me?

P.S.
Please excuse my lingo. I'm a Windows Admin, learning Unix.

Cheers,

In case you have not found an answer yet...
Within /etc/default/ you should see 12 directories and or files under the 4 default levels of install (full +oem, entire distribution,developer,end-user).
ls /etc/default (should yield the following)

cron fs kbd nfsl
devfsadm inetinit login nss
dhcpagent init mpathd pass

You could look for one of these files by typing

find / -name login

or even try to run devfsadm command (dry run method)
to see if it even works the command gets its configuration from the devfsadm file usually located in this directory.

devfsadm -vs

good luck!
